WHAT ARE POINT AND CLICK GAMES?
(and why they are GOOD for you)
Adventure Games are what essentially started the computer entertainment.
It all began almost 20 years ago with completely textual games, where the player indicated her actions through textual instructions.
The surrounding worldwas also presented as text, and players could only imagine the enviroment they played in.
As the technology moved forward, Adventure Games become more and more sophisticated. In the early 90's, the Adventures got a nice make-up.
They featured graphical representations of the world and the characters, but the lack of mouse support still insisted they should be played via keyboard input. Through a specific "dialogue box" players would interact with the enviroment, using verbs and command words to explain their actions to the computer.
And then, fast forward 3-4 years, computer mouse become a household's most favorable vermin.
That's when first POINT and CLICK games appeared. At that time Lucas Arts Entertainment and Sierra On-Line ruled the games market with their classic hits like Monkey Island Series, King's Quest, Leisure Suit Larry...
That was one of the most innovative times in computer games' history, regarding gameplay, story development and character. Point and Click genre spawned some of the most memorable characters in computer gaming history.
Characters like Sam and Max, Guybrush Threepwood, Roger Wilco and Larry Laffer, brought fun, laughter and originality to many homes all over the world.
Essentially, point and click games are about pointing and clicking.
Every interaction between the player and the game is handled through mouse clicks, be it walking, using, talking or examining objects found within the enviroment.
In Kaptain Brawe, the interactions are made through a "verb coin", basically a graphical representation of the commands.
The actions are easily recognizable, with a "hand" for use, "magnifying glass" for examining and a "speech baloon" for talking.
Simple LEFT MOUSE CLICK moves your character around the world, while the RIGHT MOUSE CLICK is used for interactions with your INVENTORY.
Inventory is crucial to ANY point and click game.
This is where the player stores her objects (or "stuff") that are used to solve puzzles, pass blocking doors and simmilar situations.
But, those are only the mechanics.
What separates point and click adventures from the rest of the games, is an intense use of your "gray matter".
Whether you are 6 or 66 year old, the puzzles presented in Kaptain Brawe will surely give you loads of fun. Remember, these games do NOT revolve around quick reflexes, the amount of enemies you face, but rather how you "OUTWIT" them. The enemies are in form of puzzles, for which you need to find solutions, combining your "inventory" objects, your logic and the actions you perform on surrounding enviroment.
These games can be played with kids by your side and can teach them to use logic, common sense and wittyness to overcome the obstacle, instead of just shooting it with a double barreled shotgun.
Sadly, the 3D era of First Person Shooters practicaly wiped out the adventure genre. The publishers were more interested in violent, technologicaly perfect 3D games, instead of aiming that technology to more entertaining and valuable content.
That is why I formed Naphtalite Productions. To bring FUN and LOGIC back to your computer screens, so that you atleast get a welcome break from all the shooting, killing and insane tension.
So relax, get a cup of tea, and enter a world where logic and common sense will guide you, not your gun.
VIVA LA REVOLUCION!
